The Coming Back

by Ric Gordon

/

about

Set first person with a fictional Union soldier at the Battle of Westport, Oct. 23, 1864, in what is now Kansas City, MO. The song follows our soldier into battle from Brush Creek, as the Union troops move south, up the hill to where the Confederate forces are waiting in what is now Loose Park. Our soldier would have made his way up the hill along a route roughly following Summit Road winding South up the hill from Ward Parkway to 51st Street.

I.
30,000 men take the field this day
Us along Brush Creek, up that hill Shelby’s men wait
Stretched for a mile down a low stone wall
At the end of the day, it’ll be them that fall
The rebel’s guns sound no match for our own
Our scouts have said, their numbers are low
The doin’ has to get done drummer boy falls on my right
Forward now through the smoke, the fear and the cries

Chorus I
My wife’s sweet face
My little boys laugh
What I’m fighting for
Is the coming back
Pies cooling on the sill
Grandma’s flapjacks
What I’m fighting for
Is the coming back

II.
Twice now we’ve tried to get up that hill
This next time, I suspect we will
Farmer named Thoman gonna’ show us the way
Rebels took his horse, now he’ll make them pay
They’ve lost 1 in 5 men to our 1 in 10
They know sure, we’re comin’ again
Col. Blair rides by says “boys it’s time”
Forward now through the smoke, the fear and the fire

Chorus II
Married Liza young
Miss her singing real bad
What I’m fighting for
Is the coming back
Up early Sunday for church
Grandpa’s always mad
What I’m fighting for
Is the coming back

Bridge
At the top of the hill I see a rebel alone,
Lower my rifle so he too has a chance to get home

Chorus I
